I never once have put a single point into swimming across any of my playthroughs and have been able to access pretty much all the secret or alternate paths.There exists scuba gear items;There is an aqualung Aug option;And at the end of the day drowning merely causes HP tick damage which technically can be healed through with enough resources/Regen Augment anyway.Same with Environment for most of the similar reasons really.Heh, your 2 chosen ones are the 2 I literally never invest a single point in. Swimming and Environmental though do not open doors, they are just mere convenience and we dont need that. Swimming is a useless skill because of the rebreather and swimming-related augs. Computer, electronics and lockpicking are the ones I always pick because there are a lot of computers to hack, a lot of electronics to bypass, and a lot of locks to pick.Then again it really depends how you want to play. If you're going to go combat-heavy, medicine is probably a good choice, as well as some weapons skills. If you're going stealthy, like I said computer, electronics and lockpicking are essential. But if you're thorough you can get passwords and codes through other means.The computer skill will help with, well, computers, but you can also enable/disable cameras and turrets and reprogram them to attack enemies.Electronics will be good for keypads, alarms, etc. Useful if you can't find the code anywhere but if you're out of multi-tools bad luck.Lockpicking helps with, obviously, locks. The higher the skill the less lockpicks you will need for a particular door.

The way the game is designed, augs typically make up for skills you don't have.That's just how I do it anyway. Better you pick what you feel is necessary and play how you want.
But if you're sticking with swimming and environmental, I'd probably choose computer so you can at least perform basic hacks. As said Electronics/Lockpick/Computers are the essential 'door openers'.
I always went Trained in swimming. Untrained is just painfully slow and I only ever used Rebreathers. Without Shifter, I stayed away from Environmental because you can't toggle the suits on/off. With Shifter, Environmental becomes a lot more useful. My top picks for most useful skills, exploration-wise, are Computer, Electronics and Lockpicking.
I always prioritized Lockpicking before Electronics because the starting levels demand more picks. Medicine I never bothered with because I never play run and gun, though I'd imagine it's helpful if you do play that way.Edit: Oh yeah, and Low Tech is, as mentioned, fantastic when combined with stealth attacks. The baton with Low Tech will one-shot any normal enemy when hit in the spine/butt (dunno about Revision), and the Prod handles Commandos and MIBs easily.Really, with some creative thinking, anything can be useful in this game.
I used to think pepper spray was worthless.until I started doing non-lethal runs. I wanted to explore a room that contained multiple opponents, didn't wanna hurt myself with a gas grenade (though you can equip a hazmat to help, especially if you're playing Shifter and can disable it after), so I figured hey, might as well see if this pepper spray is worth a crap. And it worked beautifully.

Going through a ventilation panel into a largish maintenance room, there is a way down into water-filled pipe. You need some ability to survive swimming down that pipe, which surfaces in a fenced-off pool outside the facility. It’s entirely possible you may already be familiar with the Nanoblade from Deus Ex: Human Revolution, a weapon attached to Adam’s arm that allowed him to execute enemies in melee combat. This blade is concealed within his cybernetic arm and forms when used in combat, but thanks to a few changes in Mankind Divided it can now be used as a ranged weapon.The new augmentations available to Jensen allow him shoot these blades from his arm, instantly killing enemies and pinning them directly to anything behind them provided enough force is applied.
Once launched, the attached molecular assembler instantly builds a replacement blade which can then be used in melee or ranged combat again. These projectiles can also be upgraded with a small amount of liquid explosive that shatters the blade into fragments which can wound multiple targets in a way similar to a grenade. The underlay is installed over the users body with a few thousand glass capsules containing dimorphic magnetorheological fluid.When TITAN is activated, this fluid is ejected from tiny nozzles installed throughout the skin while the underlay electrifies, causing the fluid to solidify and seal the user inside a protective shell. This shell then protects the user for a limited amount of time until the system runs out of power. What’s great about the TITAN augmentation is that it will protect you from nearly everything Mankind Divided throws at you if you keep it powered, including giant robots, explosives and hails of gunfire.

There are a few side paths in the early missions that you can get to thanks to swimming. A few are actually more convenient than the usual routes, particularly in the airport if memory serves.

I think the intent was that you would NEED swimming to get to these areas, but the necessary balance changes were never made.Oh, also the undersea lab has a few upgrades you can get to that pretty much require swimming IIRC. That or maxed health Regen, and even that is touch and go. Especially once you get your hands on a rebreather.I thought these deplete in a few seconds, unless you invest in environmental training. Even then, they're good for a one-way trip.
I'm thinking the canal road collapse here. You can get in with the help of a rebreather and then what? Drown on the way out?I never saw the appeal in these disposable gadgets that wear out in seconds, or get consumed even after you're done using them. I'd just end up wasting inventory slots for these 'for that one time I need it', but then never use it. Most non-weapon skills provide a lot of their benefit with the very first or second upgrade levels.

In contrast, weapon skills give a lot of oomph when they're fully upgraded.Along with the mechanics for upgrading weapons - and losing those upgrades if you lose the weapon - it's good to choose a weapon category early on.For a pacifist run, you will want to focus on the wrist-crossbow and the riot prod. (The ammo-free baton can help in a pinch, but it's less reliable.) If you have trouble eliminating enemies with the prod from behind, try aiming at their waist, the small of their back. Personally, I chose to consider non-human threats such as Greasels to be morally-killable.Take a look at rifle skills too, because when you max them out the sniper rifle can stealthily destroy cameras and turrets in one hit, and for non-payment sentient foes an assault rifle will outclass pistols with highly controlled burst.Other favorites include inventory space - because I'm a pack rat - jumping, lock-picking, packing, electronics. If you don't actually get into combat, there's not much call for medicine. If I recall correctly - it's been a long time - you don't really need combat strength for the prod anyway, and being able to lift big boxes always appealed more to the explorer in me.I don't know about low-tech versus cameras, if you can get that close you will probably be able to use a multi-tool instead.Later in the game there is a high-tech sword which will be handy for demolishing some doors, it might work on cameras and turrets.Make sure you invest enough in hacking that you can at least disable cameras and bots. While you could change their allegiance, most of the time that would simply ruin your attempt at pacifism, unless the only thing around them are other bots or animals.
